Fitted wardrobes for Kranj and the Gorenjska region

Kranj is the largest town in Gorenjska and one of the places we drive to most often from Žiri. Mizarstvo Lesnika has been working since 1991; we build the wardrobes in our own workshop and install them ourselves.

What Kranj rooms are like

The housing estates (Planina, Zlato polje). Flats from the 1970s and 1980s with standardised layouts: a bedroom just big enough for a bed and a wardrobe, and a hallway with an alcove. Here we most often build a fitted wardrobe across the full wall, with sliding doors where there is no clearance in front.

The old town. Thick walls, out-of-square rooms, sometimes a vaulted ceiling. The wardrobe has to be built to the smallest measurement, with a scribe fillet closing the difference on site. How to measure such a room is in How to measure an alcove for a wardrobe.

Houses around the town (Šenčur, Naklo, Predoslje, Golnik, Britof). Gorenjska houses often have a loft converted later on. The space under the slope is the main reserve there: hanging under the tall end, shelves and pull-out baskets under the low one. One such build is the Idrija Loft Wardrobe.

Newer flats and terraces (Struževo, Čirče, Kokrica). Straight walls and accurate dimensions, but usually fewer square metres than in the older flats — which means every centimetre of the wardrobe has to be doing something.

What we build most often in Kranj

• Fitted wardrobes with hinged doors across the full bedroom wall.

When a wardrobe to the ceiling pays in a flat

In flats from the 1970s and 1980s the ceiling is low, so many people build the wardrobe short and leave an empty band above it.

That band is in fact a whole compartment. A wardrobe to the ceiling in such a flat gains roughly what one full-width shelf across the wall would give — enough for bedding, suitcases and seasonal things. It also removes the surface on top where dust otherwise collects.

The cost is a little more material and a little more work levelling at the top, since the ceiling is not flat; a scribe fillet closes the difference.

Installing in a house: what we look at besides the measurements

In houses around Kranj the survey also covers:

• the width of the staircase and its turns — which decides whether the wardrobe arrives assembled or in pieces;
• how level the floor is — deviations are common in older houses and are taken up when the carcass is set;
• where the power is, if you want LED lighting inside; the wiring is far easier to prepare before installation than after it;
• whether the wall is structural or a partition — which decides how it is fixed.

How wide a single wardrobe can be

The question comes up on every longer wall. A carcass has one full-width board at the top and one at the bottom, and a board is 2800 × 2070 mm — so the widest single-piece wardrobe we build is about 2770 mm.

A wider wall is therefore not a problem, but it is two wardrobes standing side by side. The joint between them is barely visible, the two interiors can differ, and transport and getting them inside are far easier. That rule is also why our Kranj design is 2760 mm wide, divided into five equal bays.

From Žiri we cover Gorenjska and Ljubljana with its surroundings. We build, deliver and install ourselves — no site subcontractors, because adjusting the doors and levelling the carcass belongs to whoever made it.
