Fitted wardrobes for Ljubljana

We make fitted wardrobes for Ljubljana flats and houses in our own workshop in Žiri. Mizarstvo Lesnika has been working since 1991 and has over 500 bespoke projects behind it.

From a joiner's point of view Ljubljana is several different towns at once, which is exactly why an off-the-shelf wardrobe so rarely sits properly in one of its rooms.

What Ljubljana homes are like

The old centre and pre-war buildings (Center, Poljane, Trnovo, Vič). High ceilings, thick walls and alcoves that are not square. The space for a wardrobe is often already there — what is left of an old chimney or a closed-off hallway — but no two sides are parallel. The 1970s and 1980s estates (Fužine, Štepanjsko naselje, Nove Jarše, Koseze, Dravlje). Standardised but small bedrooms, often with the bed right beside the wardrobe. This is the classic case for sliding doors: there is no room to swing a leaf. The same blocks have narrow hallways and staircases, so wardrobes travel in pieces and are assembled on site.

Loft conversions. Ljubljana has a great many. The space under a slope is usable, but only if the wardrobe is made for it — how is set out in Wardrobes under a slope and under stairs.

New build. Straight walls, accurate dimensions — but often low ceilings and a designed-in alcove a few centimetres too narrow for anything off the shelf. Here a bespoke wardrobe often pays simply because it uses every available centimetre.

How it works

You do the design yourself in the 3D configurator: enter the dimensions, choose the doors, arrange the inside and pick a decor. Then you send an enquiry, we get in touch and arrange a survey at your address. After the survey we prepare a binding quote; once the contract is signed we build and install.

What we build most often in Ljubljana

Three rooms that keep recurring in Ljubljana

A narrow bedroom with the bed against the wall. Less than half a metre is left between the bed and the wardrobe. The answer is sliding doors, with the inside arranged so that the drawers sit on the side that is always reachable. The two door types are compared in Sliding or hinged doors.

A deep alcove beside the front door. A metre and a half wide, nearly a metre deep, often with a meter or services in the wall. We build a fitted wardrobe with a shallow part for shoes and a deep one for coats, keeping the meter reachable behind a removable panel.

A tall room in a pre-war building. A three-metre ceiling. A wardrobe to the ceiling, with a separate compartment up top for seasonal things reached from a step — space that would otherwise stay empty.

Access, parking and installing in the city

In Ljubljana the installation is often more a logistics question than a joinery one. Before we come we agree:

• access to the building and whether the van can stop briefly; in the inner centre that often needs a permit, arranged by the owner or the building manager;
• the lift — its internal dimensions and its load rating; where there is no lift or it is too small, the wardrobe is split into smaller pieces and assembled in the flat;
• a date that does not clash with other trades: the wardrobe goes in last, after the floor and after the painter.

None of this is a detail. A fitted wardrobe that has to be carried to the fifth floor up a narrow staircase is planned differently from one going into the ground floor of a house — how it splits into pieces is decided before anything is cut.

Žiri lies in the Poljane valley, which puts Ljubljana and the towns around it within everyday driving distance. We do the building, the delivery and the installation ourselves; at installation we level the carcass, adjust the doors and drawers and take the packaging away.
