Fitted wardrobes for Škofja Loka and the Poljane valley

Škofja Loka is our nearest town: the Mizarstvo Lesnika workshop stands in Žiri, at the other end of the same Poljane valley. We have been making wardrobes to measure since 1991, and this part of Gorenjska is where most of them are.

What Škofja Loka rooms are like

The old town and the buildings around it. Thick walls, out-of-square rooms, low attics. Wardrobes here are built to the smallest measurement with a scribe fillet closing the difference — the rule rather than the exception in old houses.

The estates (Podlubnik, Frankovo naselje). Standardised flats whose bedrooms always take the wardrobe on the same wall, and hallways that want a narrow, deep unit. Sliding doors are a common choice, because there is no clearance in front.

Houses in the Poljane and Selca valleys. Family houses with a loft, a staircase, and often the space under the stairs that spent decades as a cupboard for the vacuum cleaner. That space is the most rewarding of all: an under-stairs wardrobe can replace a whole dressing area. It exists as the Cerkno Under-Stairs Wardrobe.

Newer houses and semis. Straight walls and enough room for a walk-in, which around Škofja Loka is increasingly chosen instead of several separate wardrobes. How to plan one is in Walk-in dressing rooms.

What we build most often here

• Fitted wardrobes across the full wall, hinged or sliding.
• Under-stairs and under-slope wardrobes in houses.

• Hallway wardrobes and corner wardrobes in smaller bedrooms.

An open dressing unit instead of a wardrobe with doors

In houses with a small spare room or a wider stretch of hallway, an open dressing unit is increasingly chosen over a conventional wardrobe with doors.

There are three reasons: it is cheaper (doors are often the most expensive part of a wardrobe), access is immediate, and the room feels larger without big closed surfaces. The price is tidiness — everything on an open shelf is visible, including whatever is not folded.

In practice a mixture works best: hanging and shelves open, folded clothes in drawers, one closed column for seasonal things. Planning such a space is covered in Walk-in dressing rooms.

Old houses: what "made to measure" means in practice

In Loka houses and in the old town it is common for none of the four measurements to agree with the others. That is not an obstacle, but it is why we never work from measurements sent over the phone for such rooms.

In practice it means three things. The carcass is built to the smallest width and height measured. The difference at the sides and under the ceiling is closed with a scribe fillet shaped to the wall on site — that fillet is what makes a wardrobe look built in. And the floor is taken up when the carcass is set, not afterwards.

The result is a wardrobe that meets the wall along its whole length, even though the wall is not straight.

What you can prepare before the survey

• Clear the space along the wall the wardrobe will occupy, at least enough for us to reach the corners and the floor.
• Note what is going into it — how much long hanging, how much folded, whether you need room for bedding or for sports kit.
• Tell us about services, including any you know are buried in the wall.
• Decide about the doors. If there is no clearance in front, sliding is effectively the only option; the two are compared in Sliding or hinged doors.
